Week 1 - 4: What is a Manbo Makout?

As a Houngan Makout, a Manbo Makout is the feminine counterpart to a Houngan. She has a bitasyon, roots, and reference. In a bitasyon, the Lwa of the family chooses either a Manbo or a Houngan per generation. A Manbo, guides, leads, and harmonizes while maintaining peace and unity.

As femininity represents beauty and tranquility, femininity isn't meant to destroy, or bring mess and chaos. As Vodou is nature, as it is heritage and truth, it is meant for the Houngan and Manbo to follow this as well.

A Manbo's role is to protect her family, and to keep everything within the family.

Additionally, if you marry into a Houngan's family, you are granted the title of Manbo - out of respect. Just as a President's wife would be addressed as First Lady. In Haiti, it is customary to refer to a Houngan's wife as "Madam Houngan", or similarly, "Manbo".
